Day 7 hiking on the PCT

Everything is frozen! What a tough night I had. It seems like Al can just keep sleeping but the cold seems to wake me up then I lay there thinking about how cold I am and start shivering again.

Al tries to get out of the tent early, around 6 but his shoes are frozen, he can’t get them to open up and get his feet in. Not a good start to the day. It takes me about 20 minutes of messing with my trail runners before I can get my feet in.

Then up we go again. Lots of snow. We want to get to Mount Laguna today.

The snow is deep, about 8 inches with frozen footprints of the hikers before us. The sun is rising higher and quickly warming it to a slushy frozen mess. Very slippery. Thank goodness for our walking sticks, they saved us from many potential falls today.

We ate lunch on a fallen tree, it was really lovely and peaceful. .

We walked through a nice forest, if it wasn’t for the snow it would have been really nice.

We decided after all that another early day. Just 6 miles. We will stay somewhere in Mount Laguna. We actually walked past where our exit for town was and had to walk back.

We walked through a camp ground to get into Mount Laguna. Not really a big town just a post office, a couple of restaurants. a couple of stores and a visitors center to Cleveland National Forrest. There were cabins to rent and rooms also behind the store.

The place was packed with tourists. Both restaurants were full. They were buying sleds and things to play in the snow.

We got to the post office and found out it was closed already.

I wanted to bring one of these home, but it was heavy, 2lbs maybe

We went to an outfitter store that also sold food for hikers. We asked about places to stay and she said we could pitch our tent right in back, she had 11 acres and we could pitch our tent anywhere.

So we shopped in her store for dinner and bought some trail food as well. We got some MRE’s, that were really good.

We cleared some snow to pitch the tent, then we got our gear together for a shower at the visitors center but when we got there we were told they didn’t have showers but the camp ground did. So we went back to our tent. Then walked back to visitors center to get water and use the restroom before bed.

We were at mile 42.1 of the PCT

More to come, until then Be Well.
